Mainframes have been declared obsolete for decades, yet they still sit behind some of the world’s most important financial, retail and government systems. The difficult question is no longer whether these platforms will disappear quickly. It is who will maintain them while organisations decide what to modernise.

Why the skills gap persists

Experienced mainframe engineers are leaving the workforce while fewer developers begin their careers on these systems. That creates a knowledge-transfer problem as much as a recruitment problem.

Where organisations are most exposed

The greatest risk tends to sit in applications that are business-critical, poorly documented and maintained by very small teams. A modernisation programme that ignores institutional knowledge can make this worse rather than better.

What companies can do now

Successful organisations combine documentation, mentoring, selective modernisation and better developer tooling. The goal should be to reduce dependency on scarce expertise without assuming every mainframe workload needs to be rewritten.
